Asda launches £1 'summer' sauce set to transport Britons to the beach but warns it could 'divide the nation'

As we settle into June, many Britons will be excited as summer fast approaches, daydreaming about sunny days and trips to the beach.

Asda has just announced the launch of a new sauce that aims to bring the beach to British kitchens. This week, the Chip Shop Curry Mayo (£1.10, 270g) will hit stores and online.

The supermarket said that this would be a great addition to any al fresco dining table. Asda stated: "Whether it’s a BBQ or a picky tea, summer is the season for sauces and condiments, as go-to options for elevating everyday meals.

"Offering customers a breadth of choice and exciting flavours, Asda is launching seven new condiments to its existing range, including Peri Peri Marinade and an industry first: Chip Shop Curry Mayonnaise.

"Inspired by the family favourite chip shop curry sauce, Asda’s Chip Shop Curry Mayo (£1.10, 270g) is ideal for dipping and drizzling over chips.

"The creamy sauce is packed with a blend of warming spices, perfect for those nostalgic for the classic chip shop taste.

"Asda expects the new launch to divide the nation, knowing that curry sauce on chips already divides fans with just 24 per cent of Brits choosing it from a fish and chip shop.

"But with chips being Brits’ third favourite food and the flavoured mayonnaise market booming, Asda expects the new product to be popular this summer. And at just £1.10, it’s a more budget-friendly option versus other pricier flavoured mayonnaise."

Asda’s product development manager for condiments, Marion Muir, commented on the new product. She said: "We’re so excited to launch this new innovation, which you won’t currently find elsewhere on the market. We’re seeing a growing trend in flavoured mayonnaise, so when developing this product we wanted to put a twist on something classic.

"Curry sauce on chips is an iconic taste that many of us know and love, but for some people, it’s quite a divisive flavour.

"We know it will get people talking, but we’re confident that anyone who tries our new mayo on chips will be convinced of how tasty it is!"

Condiment connoisseurs can also get their hands on Asda’s new Peri Peri Marinade (£1.28, 280g), Ranch Dressing (£1, 250ml), Pickled Pink Onions (£1, 340g), Pickled Pink Slaw (£1, 340g), Horseradish Mustard (£1.50, 180g), and Cook by Asda Avocado Speciality Oil (£3, 250ml).

The supermarket said: "Joining the new flavoured mayonnaise, is Asda’s new Peri Peri Marinade, a tasty, zingy marinade with garlic, lemon and chilli, perfect for coating chicken before grilling on the BBQ.

"There’s also the creamy Ranch Dressing, made with buttermilk, garlic and herbs that will liven up fresh, green salad leaves.
