Netflix has announced plans to release a "Peaky Blinders" film with Oscar winner Cillian Murphy returning to the role of gangster Tommy Shelby.

"It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me," Murphy is quoted as saying in a Netflix press release on Tuesday. "This is one for the fans," added the 48-year-old Irish actor, who recently won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the film "Oppenheimer".

In a photo shared by Netflix on social media of what appears to be the script for the film, the cover page reads: "Written by Steven Knight" and "Directed by Tom Harper".

"Peaky Blinders" ran as a BBC series in six seasons from 2013 to 2022. The story revolves around a legendary street gang in England's second largest city, Birmingham, in the period between the turn of the century and World War I.

The film will continue the story into World War II in what show creator Steven Knight described as an "explosive chapter" in the gang's story. Netflix has not yet given a timeline for the film's release.
