Sunderland January target 'set to leave' current club and become free agent this summer - Fabrizio Romano

A Sunderland January transfer target is now set to become a free agent this month, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Sunderland will have plenty of names on their transfer radar ahead of the summer window opening for business on June 14th.

Expect sporting director Kristjaan Speakman to have a number of targets despite the cub having no manager in place, and expect him to take a look at those he missed out on in January too.

The January transfer window was a frustrating one for the Black Cats who signed Calum Styles, Romaine Mundle, and Leo Hjelde.

No striker was signed, and once again, at least one new one is needed this summer. But Sunderland will still bolster other positions with what is likely to be very young players.

One linked in January, but who didn’t sign, was Omari Forson at Manchester United.

Omari Forson set to leave Manchester United

Forson, 19, sees his Manchester United contract expire this summer, having been with the Red Devils since 2019.

He began his career with West Ham, then spending time with Spurs before joining United, making four Premier League appearances under Erik ten Hag last season.

United previously made a contract offer to Forson. Romano then revealed that Forson would be leaving this summer, before more speculation that Forson might stay at Old Trafford.

But Romano has once again put those rumours to bed, revealing on X that Forson will be leaving Manchester United this summer.

Should Sunderland sign Omari Forson after Manchester United release

This signing certainly seems like another typical Speakman signing; a young, free agent, but not a striker.

Though whilst Sunderland desperately need strikers this summer, more young talents certainly won’t go amiss, and Forson looks like exactly that.

He’s inexperienced, but the fact that he’s actually played for Manchester United in the Premier League should tell us all we need to know about his potential.

And with Jack Clarke likely leaving this summer, whoever the next Sunderland manager is will need bodies on the flanks, with Forson able to play out wide or as a no.10.

Expect there to be widespread interest in this exciting young talent, who on a free transfer could eventually pocket the buying club a very tidy profit.

And although Sunderland don’t have a manager right now, the Stadium of Light remains a great place for younger players to cut their teeth, and Forson could get a glowing reference from Amad Diallo if he were to head to Wearside this summer.
