Invincible Celtic treble-winner cruelly released after helping club win promotion to the Premier League

Celtic have a number of former players playing in some of Europe’s top leagues and beyond for that matter.

Giorgos Giakoumakis is currently strutting his stuff in the MLS but is now heading for his next big move.

We also have the likes of Jota, Moussa Dembele and Jack Hendry all mixing it in the money-laden Saudi Arabian leagues.

Carl Starfelt, for all his struggles, is facing the likes of Real Madrid in La Liga and as we all know, Jeremie Frimpong is now a champion in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen.

However, there are players that are playing in the Championship in England and one has just been cruelly dumped from his club after helping them secure Premier League promotion last season.

Celtic Invincible Stuart Armstrong in now a free agent

Stuart Armstrong was a key player in Brendan Rodgers’ first tenure as the Celtic manager back in 2016/17.

The former Scottish international made 47 appearances for Celtic in Rodgers’ maiden season scoring 17 goals and creating seven winning an unprecedented Invincibles Treble.

A deadline day signing alongside Gary Mackay-Steven [BBC], the £2m double deal proved to be value for money for Celtic after Armstrong made a total of 144 appearances hitting the back of the net 28 times and also creating 25 goals. [Transfermarkt]

That form earned Armstrong a £7m move to Southampton in 2018 [The Times] where he has served the club well over the past six years.

And now, he has been released by the Premier League club after his contract expired this month.

In a statement released yesterday, Southampton said, “The club would like to thank Stuart for his commitment and effort during his time as a Saint, and we wish him the very best in whatever comes next.”

With 214 appearances for The Sainst and 25 goals and 19 assists, Armstrong was key to keeping them in the Premier League for five seasons before their eventual relegation at the end of last season.

Now that they are back in the English top-flight, Armstrong’s time at the club has now ended as he recovers from a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the play-off final at the end of last month.

I’m sure there won’t be a shortage of clubs waiting to take him on when he recovers from his injury and we all at 67 Hail Hail wish him the best of luck in his search for a new home.
