LA Galaxy target Robert Lewandowski for summer 2025 transfer - report

By Braden Chalker

Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy have reportedly made Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski a top transfer target for the summer 2025 window.

The Galaxy have been quite busy ahead of the MLS secondary transfer window, with Marco Reus in advanced talks to sign for the five-time MLS Cup winners in the coming weeks. While Galaxy fans across the United States would love to see the Lewandowski join Reus at Dignity Health Sports park this summer to form a Borussia Dortmund reunion, they may have to wait a little longer for that to happen.

According to a report from AS USA's Rodrigo Serrano, the ex-Bayern Munich talisman would join next summer following the 2024/25 La Liga campaign. The report also states that securing Reus' signature this summer -- in which the secondary window opens up in mid July -- would be vital for Lewandowski to also put pen to paper with the Galaxy in 2025.

An important thing to note is Barcelona's financial position in regard to Lewandowski's salary. Although Lewandowski is under contract through the 2025/26 season, there is a clause in the agreement stating Barcelona can terminate his contract if he doesn't play in over 55% of the team's total games during the 2024/25 season, according to Sport via Daily Mail.

Given that Lewandowski is currently earning just over €27m per season (or $29m), Barcelona could look to get the Poland international off their books and thus he could join the Galaxy as a free agent -- but that would require new head coach Hansi Flick to essentially bench Lewandowski throughout the upcoming season, which seems rather unlikely.

Another important aspect is the Galaxy's Designated Player situation. It's hard to imagine a scenario where Lewandowski joins the Galaxy -- or any MLS side -- as a non-Designated Player. Thus, the Galaxy would have to either sell or buyout one of their current DPs in Gabriel Pec, Joseph Paintsil or Riqui Puig.

However, the Galaxy have plenty of time to think about how they would move forward in their efforts to sign Lewandowksi since it would more than likely happen next summer, if a move even materializes. Should the former Dortmund striker make the move to MLS, he would become the latest high-profile player to ink a deal in the relatively young league along with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris.
