'Been led to believe': David Ornstein suggests why Newcastle United might struggle to sign Michael Olise

Newcastle United are interested in signing Michael Olise, but that does not necessarily mean they will be able to.

The Crystal Palace youngster is a man in demand, with Newcastle United one of multiple clubs that are keen to secure his signature.

The Magpies are interested in Olise, as they eye up a marquee right winger to help take Eddie Howe’s team to the next level. He would certainly do that, and the prospect of him linking up with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak is tantalising.

However, Newcastle are not alone in the race for Olise. Manchester United and Chelsea are also keen, and even they might have a big issue when it comes to tempting the attacker away from Selhurst Park.

What David Ornstein has said about Michael Olise’s next move

That is according to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, who recently branded Olise as ‘one to watch’ during this summer’s transfer window.

Ornstein has now gone into more depth on Olise’s future on the Athletic’s YouTube channel, and explained why a move to a Champions League club might be on the agenda for a player with an extremely high ceiling.

“This is somebody that there’s a feeling around should be aiming as high as possible,” he said.

“I’ve always been led to believe that Champions League would be the step he would take after Crystal Palace.

“That’s not ruling out a really exciting project. Say he holds talks with Manchester United and he really likes what he hears and the numbers are right and it all adds up then maybe something does happen there.

“But you need to know with Michael Olise that, if Champions League teams are in the frame and he is going to leave what is a really stable and exciting project at Crystal Palace, then you would imagine he would be looking for the step that’s really going to allow him to challenge for and win the biggest trophies in world football.”

Newcastle United move might not appeal to Olise

It might need to take a really special offer for Newcastle United to tempt Olise to St James’ Park this summer. That was one of the club’s fears recently, with big money and clear ambitions required to get major names to move to the North East.

Olise falls into that category, and Ornstein has suggested that he might only leave Palace to join a club that can offer him Champions League football. That is not something the Magpies can do, having failed to qualify for any European competition.

Unless the Toon project under PIF is enough to convince Olise, it feels unlikely that he will be on his way to Tyneside. That is a shame, as he is an immensely talented player who would be a massive improvement on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.

That is exactly what Eddie Howe is looking for in the transfer market, as he prepares to spend the bulk of his summer budget on a new right winger. Olise is on Newcastle’s radar, but he might be out of reach.
