It’s only been a little over a month since the New Orleans Saints drafted former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler with their fifth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. And the former Gamecock is already getting noticed by one of his newest teammates.

In an episode of the “Green Light Podcast” posted May 31, Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr joined Chris Long to discuss the outlook of the Saints upcoming season.

One of the topics Carr discussed was Rattler. In the episode, Carr talked highly of Rattler’s character in the offseason so far.

“Oh yeah, him and Jake [Haener] are good kids,” Carr said.

Rattler also has been constantly seeking new knowledge from the veteran quarterback in practice. And it would make sense considering Carr has been in the league since 2014 and seen a lot of football.

“He’s asking a lot of questions,” Carr said. “As a veteran, that is all you want. He has so much respect for what I’ve done and the things I have been able to do.”

Carr feels that Rattler’s seeking of knowledge helps the team as they get ready for the season.

“To see him be that hungry and to see Jake be that hungry, as a veteran, it just helps our team,” Carr said. “I’m just like, ‘Dude, this is awesome.’”

Not only does Carr think that the hard work of Rattler and backup quarterback Jake Haener help the team for the upcoming season, he also believes the work and character of both quarterbacks will help serve them down the road.

“They are great people, great teammates and great leaders, so I’m excited for their future. They’re going to be good players,” Carr said.

After there was a record-tying six quarterbacks taken in the first round of the draft in April, Rattler was the next quarterback drafted at pick 150.

Although Rattler is currently slated as the third on the Saints quarterback depth chart, he will almost certainly have his opportunities to prove himself in practices throughout the summer as well as when the team starts their preseason schedule in August.

In his final season at South Carolina, Rattler threw for 3,186 yards and 19 touchdowns with eight interceptions.

At the NFL combine, Rattler posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.95 seconds along with a vertical jump of 32” and a broad jump of nine feet.
