The Indianapolis Colts got their first look at rookie wide receiver Adonai Mitchell during rookie minicamp, but at OTAs, Mitchell got his first look at quarterback Anthony Richardson.
As an NFL Draft prospect and still to this day Richardson’s physical traits jump off the page. Built like a linebacker with the speed of a wide receiver and the the skillset of a quarterback, which Mitchell reacted to on Tuesday.
“Man that dude’s a freak, I’ll tell you that,” Mitchell said. “He’s like a created player, he’s like one of those players that could legit do anything on the field. You talk about just arm strength, crazy arm strength. This man can roll right, throw on the opposite hash to the left, like it’s a lot of stuff I ain’t seen before.”
Richardson’s rookie season was cut short after just four games, suffering a grade three AC joint sprain that required surgery. But in his four games under center for the Colts he threw for 577 yards, rushed for 136 yards, and scored seven total touchdowns between the air and the ground.
Indianapolis is hoping that Richardson can bounce back from his injury and remain healthy throughout the entire 2024-2025 season. Which could be made easier with a strong connection with his new big target out wide.
“So you just talk about building chemistry, I’ve just been excited. Like every time I step up on the field I’m like man, what are we going to get today? I can’t wait to see it, I can’t wait to be a part of it, and I can’t wait to play with it,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell was selected with the No. 52 overall pick in the second round of the most recent NFL Draft by the Colts. With the 6-foot-4 wideout breaking out for 55 catches, 845 yards, and 11 touchdowns last season at Texas after being an impact player for Georgia particularly in the College Football Playoffs. As he looks to continue building chemistry with his new quarterback and translate his game to the next level.
“So it’s been fun just leaning each other, learning what he likes to do, kind of what I think as a receiver, and kind of just mixing the two. Because once we’re on the same page, if the whole offense is on the same page with that one man, it’ll be a very special year,” Mitchell concluded.
Mitchell and Richardson have the opportunity to be the most physically imposing quarterback/wide receiver duo in the league, and it will be fascinating to see what they’re able to accomplish together this upcoming season.
