Steve Evans predicts free agent's next move as Wrexham consider finally striking a deal

Wrexham are in the market for new signings after winning promotion and one familiar name appears to be on Phil Parkinson’s wish list.

Wrexham have allowed a number of players to leave the club this summer but are yet to strike an incoming deal.

The likes of Ben Tozer and Aaron Hayden have already found new clubs and centre backs are therefore a major need.

Luke Young also departed this summer and Wrexham simply must bring in additional midfield quality.

Phil Parkinson has a quality midfield trio at his disposal with Andy Cannon, George Evans and Elliot Lee forming a superb engine room.

Wrexham are now facing a major step up to League One though and more options are needed in midfield.

Steve Evans on Wrexham target Jamie Lindsay

Wrexham are already being linked with potential signings in midfield and a couple of targets both hail from Scotland.

The first is Brighton and Hove Albion’s Marc Leonard, with Wrexham eyeing a £300,000 deal.

That deal won’t be easy given rival interest in Leonard but Wrexham do have other options in mind.

Reports indicate that Wrexham are still eyeing a move to sign former Celtic talent Jamie Lindsay.

Wrexham wanted to sign Lindsay in January but saw a deal fall through before the transfer deadline.

Lindsay has now left Rotherham United having confirmed that he is not signing a new contract with the Millers.

Having been so keen to strike a deal for Lindsay in January, Wrexham will surely be keen to strike a deal now.

Rotherham boss Steve Evans has now commented on the situation, telling the Rotherham Advertiser that Lindsay wanted a deal that he just couldn’t provide.

Evans felt that Rotherham would have kept Lindsay if his demands hadn’t been beyond what the Millers boss felt was good value.

Intriguingly, Evans predicted that Lindsay will ‘probably’ play against Rotherham next season, believing that he will be joining a League One rival.

That may well be Wrexham and some may see Evans’ comments as a hint towards a move to the STōK Cae Ras.

“We would have kept Jamie. I had some good meetings with him and he was a good kid,” said Evans. “He wanted terms I wasn’t prepared to ask the board to do. It’s as simple as that. I’ll still love the kid and he’ll probably play against us next season.”

“He’s true Scottish blood like myself so from that point of view it was nice to work with him for a couple of weeks but now he moves on,” he added.

Would Wrexham sign Lindsay and Leonard?

Wrexham need to improve the squad across the pitch; that is just the reality of moving from the National League to League One in such a short space of time.

Perhaps Parkinson will want to add two midfielders this summer; a proven free agent in Lindsay and a cash deal for an up-and-comer in Leonard.

That would give Wrexham some outstanding midfield options but leave some players on the outside looking in.

James Jones missed the final two months of the season through injury and Jordan Davies has been a bit-part player in 2024.

Wrexham may need to be ruthless in order to move forward and we have already seen that with the exits of Tozer, Hayden and Young.

If Wrexham can genuinely bring in both Lindsay and Leonard, Parkinson may well take the leap and really improve his midfield options both for right now and for the future.
