Former Oklahoma kicker Gavin Marshall has signed with a Big Ten school.
The former top kicker recruit has committed and signed with Maryland. The 6-foot-1, 193-pound kicker was initially committed to Vanderbilt before receiving clarification from the SEC that he would have to sit a year. With Oklahoma moving to the SEC this fall, the Sooners followed the conference’s transfer rules this spring that state spring interleague transfers must sit a year.
Marshall visited Maryland this past weekend and ultimately flipped to the Terrapins. A Frisco, Texas, native and IMG Academy product, he converted two extra point attempts in 2023 at Oklahoma and handled kickoff duties three times in limited action. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
During his time at IMG, Marshall made eight of nine field goal attempts, including the two longest field goals in program history with kicks of 47 and 49 yards. He also converted all 60 PATs and 50 of his 67 kickoffs went for touchbacks.
Maryland has found previous success at kicker in the transfer portal. The Terps took Eastern Michigan transferChad Ryland in 2022. He went on to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2022 and converted 19-of-23 field goal attempts, including being 3-for-6 on attempts of over 50 yards. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft.
Jack Howes served as the Terps’ primary kicker last season. He converted 13 of 19 field goals with a long of 49 yards. He also was 46 of 47 on PATs and handled kickoff duties. Gavin Marshall gives Maryland another leg to use in the kicking game.
Head coach Mike Locksley signed a contract extension in April 2023 through the 2027 season. Maryland has finished with three consecutive winning seasons, winning bowl games each year.
Maryland opens the season on Aug. 31 against UConn, set for a noon ET kick on FS1. The Terrapins open Big Ten play on Sept. 7, hosting Michigan State.
