Tokyo stocks open higher on tech buying after record Nasdaq close

Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as technology shares tracked overnight advances by their U.S. counterparts, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq index finishing at a record high in New York.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 423.66 points, or 1.10 percent, from Wednesday to 38,913.83. The broader Topix index was up 18.84 points, or 0.69 percent, at 2,767.06.

On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by oil and coal product, transportation equipment and electric appliance issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 155.90-93 yen compared with 156.06-16 yen in New York and 156.14-15 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0872-0876 and 169.49-59 yen against $1.0864-0874 and 169.67-77 yen in New York and $1.0871-0872 and 169.75-79 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
