Will Levis tweaking stance during offseason because “quarterbacks are weirdos”

In his rookie season, Will Levis worked his way up to starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, throwing for 1,808 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions (no thanks to an abysmal offensive line). Now entering his second year, the former Kentucky Wildcat is dialing in on the little things to take his game — and hopefully the Titans — to a new level.

Yesterday, Levis told reporters at the Titans’ mandatory minicamp that he’s spent his offseason tweaking his stance to improve his delivery.

“Quarterbacks are weirdos,” Levis said. “We’re always tweaking something. You always feel like something might be off. You saw [Tom] Brady go through a couple of different footworks throughout one season.

“The ball wasn’t coming out the way that I would’ve liked it to and we just started looking at what could potentially be the cause of it and just been messing around with things, specifically my base, that I feel like I’ve gotten to a good spot.”

This will be Levis’ first season playing for new Titans head coach Brian Callahan, offensive coordinator Nick Holz, and quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree. He said all three had input on ways to improve his stance.

“It was both,” Levis said when asked if the staff approached him about his stance or vice versa. “Obviously, I know when I’m not throwing it my best, and just talking through with Bo [Hardegree] and Nick [Holz] and Brian [Callahan] about why that might be and just a couple of things that I can kind of hold in the back of my head in practice and pre-practice, and then hopefully have it transition into drills, and I feel like it has so far.”

Holz, who comes to the Titans after a year as Jacksonville’s Passing Game Coordinator (with new Titans WR Calvin Ridley), is very impressed by Levis’ willingness to change things up to improve.

“He’s really as coachable of a quarterback as you can find. He takes all the instructions, he doesn’t really fight you on anything. He’s got ideas, ‘Hey this is why I’m doing this,’ and he’s got a really unique — I’m not sure I’ve ever been around a guy who’s more in touch with all of his mechanical things.”

“Some guys it’s just a natural thing,” Callahan added. “You just feel what you’re coaching and he’s done a great job. I think he sees the benefit in his mechanical improvement and his accuracy. I’ve been really pleased with how much he’s taken and actually translated into actually doing it. It’s been fun to watch.”

So far, those tweaks are paying off in practice.

“Absolutely,” Holz said. “He’s just been more consistently accurate, right? When you play with a base and you’ve got your field rooted in the ground, really, there’s less variation in how the throws come out. When you’re kind of platforming off-kilter like that, sometimes your arm angles are all off, or it sails or it drops.”

Hear more from Levis, Callahan, and Holz below. The Titans’ mandatory minicamp wraps up tomorrow and there’s one more OTA next week before the team gets some time off before training camp begins in late July.
