It's been nearly two years and four months since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to invade Ukraine.

On February 22, 2022, The New Yorker's Robin Wright wrote: "In a brazen challenge to Ukraine’s independence, Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops, tanks, and artillery into two separatist regions—Donetsk and Luhansk—hours after unilaterally recognizing them as independent countries and declaring them allies."

However, during an interview on former President Donald Trump's White House chief strategist Steve Bannon's War Room podcast Wednesday, US Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) claimed that Putin never wanted Ukraine because he already has "enough land."

"How many clips have you seen of a battle in Ukraine? Zero in the last 6, 7, 8 months?" the right-wing senator said. It’s one-sided. Putin’s just kind of sitting back watching what’s going on, wondering, 'Hey, when y’all going to come over and we’ll draw a line here,'" Tuberville said.

"He doesn’t want Ukraine. He doesn’t want Europe. Hell, he’s got enough land of his own,” the Alabama GOP leader added. "He just wants to make sure that he does not have United States weapons in Ukraine pointing at Moscow."

Several legal experts, journalists and lawmakers were quick to slam the Republican senator's remarks.

Legal analyst Joyce Vance commented: "I'd really like to have Doug Jones back as my Senator. Heck, this almost makes Sessions look good."

US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said: "It's a scary state of affairs when a U.S. Senator, who sits on the Armed Services Committee, would rather spew Russian propaganda than listen to our U.S. intelligence."
