'An opportunity...': Phil Parkinson makes inevitable admission about Wrexham squad ahead of pre-season

Phil Parkinson has now revealed what will inevitably happen at Wrexham ahead of pre-season.

Wrexham’s celebrations after winning promotion to League One have died down and the hard work now begins ahead of a gruelling campaign.

Phil Parkinson is currently ironing out plans to assemble a squad capable of battling against some of the division’s powerhouses, including Birmingham and Huddersfield, with a solid base to build from.

The Reds have already waved goodbye to several first-team players as the likes of Ben Tozer, Luke Young and Aaron Hayden have all departed the Racecourse Ground.

New challenges await Tozer and Hayden at Carlisle United and Forest Green respectively but the outgoings don’t stop there, with Parkinson now commenting on his current squad ahead of pre-season.

Phil Parkinson says he’s open to a few Wrexham players leaving on loan

Wrexham will head to the United States for their pre-season tour for the second year running, linking up with Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in their home country.

It begins on 19th July as the Reds play Premier League sides Bournemouth and Chelsea before heading to Canada to take on Vancouver Whitecaps.

For Parkinson, it’s an opportunity to see his full squad in action, perhaps giving individuals such as Jordan Davies and Sam Dalby a chance to impress.

The 56-year-old has also said there may be opportunities for some of his players to go out on loan if his squad reaches the 22-man limit.

Speaking to The Leader, the Wrexham boss said: “If we bring players in over the 22 then obviously there will be an opportunity for maybe one or two lads to go out on loan. But that probably won’t happen until we get back for pre-season.

“As everybody knows, it is just getting the squad size right with enough cover in it. “We will try and get that and get the kind of quality throughout the squad; not just in the top 12 or 13 players but deeper than that which helps you as the season goes on.”

Which Wrexham players could leave on loan?

Multiple players in the squad will be limited to first-team opportunities in League One, meaning the best option could be a loan spell away from the club.

Jake Bickerstaff – who spent the second half of the season on loan at Accrington Stanley – could find himself on loan at another League Two club this summer.

The 22-year-old is a promising young striker, who came through the youth ranks with Max Cleworth, but he needs regular game time to continue his development.

Jordan Davies is another player they could allow to leave on loan. Although the 25-year-old has started a business venture in Wrexham, it’s difficult to see him dislodge several midfield talents at the club after struggling last term.

Parkinson may also choose to loan out Anthony Forde if they can’t sell him permanently. The right wing-back saw opportunities hard to come by following his injury and the 31-year-old has a huge task on his hands to dislodge one of Ryan Barnett or Luke Bolton.
