German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has downplayed expectations for the peace summit to be held in Switzerland in mid-June. At the same time, he spoke about the goals of the meeting, Tagesschau reports.
"There will be no peace talks there. We are still far from that as long as Russia believes it can achieve its goals on the battlefield,” he says.
According to the Chancellor, it is about engaging countries around the world to make it clear to Moscow that international law and the UN Charter are in force. He emphasizes that Russia must withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
"The Bundeswehr should be strengthened and Ukraine should receive assistance. But there is nothing naïve or indecent about citizens worrying about peace,” Scholz adds.
Peace summit
At the end of next week, Switzerland will host a peace summit, which may be attended by representatives of more than 150 countries. The summit is expected to discuss the peace formula proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
However, Russia was not invited to the summit. The President's Office believes that the presence of the Russian side could negatively affect the search for solutions and prevent the achievement of peaceful goals.
However, some countries have refused to participate in the conference, stating that both sides of the conflict must participate in the summit to achieve peace.
Earlier, Singapore confirmed its participation in the peace summit.
At the same time, the media reported which countries of Southeast Asia will participate in the peace summit.
