South West Norfolk’s Labour candidate paid a visit to one of the country’s oldest flour mills as part of a campaign to promote his priorities.
Terry Jermy was invited by the UK Flour Millers Association to visit Heygates in Downham to learn more about the industry. He was given a tour of the site and a chance to meet staff.
Heygates, on Railway Road, was built in 1851 and mills more than 90,000 tons of wheat per year.
It specialises in soft wheat, including biscuit and batter flour, and with around 70 employees, it is a considerable source of employment in the town.
Mr Jermy said: “I was pleased to be able to discuss my campaign priorities which include jobs and pay.
“Heygates like many local employers struggle to recruit staff with the right skills, particularly engineering skills, and this is an area I would focus on if elected.
“I also discussed Labour’s plan for Great British Energy, because as an energy-intensive process, Heygates’ energy bills are a concern and I believe we must do more to support firms with energy costs.”
Great British Energy is a national Labour scheme. The party has pledged to create a publicly-owned clean energy company to power the country.
