‘Mojo was up’: Eddie Jordan believes 42-point driver simply had to change teams at the end of this season

Unsurprisingly, attention has turned to what’s going on off the track in Formula 1 after one of the dullest races in recent memory in Monaco.

Although Charles Leclerc’s victory was incredibly popular, the red flag removed the only jeopardy he faced as he and his rivals did not need to pit for new tyres.

Eddie Jordan was speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast about one driver who is coming to the end of his contract this year.

The 2025 grid is in flux right now with half of the seats filled and several more changes expected before everything is confirmed.

However, we already know the line-ups for three teams going into next year – McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari.

Jordan believes that Lewis Hamilton needed to make a change at the end of the season to get back to his very best.

The seven-time world champion has only scored 42 points this season and he will aim to get the most out of a car that won’t be prioritised by Mercedes anymore with George Russell retained for 2025.

However, his quality can’t be denied and Ferrari will hope they can help him return to his very best and win that historic eighth title.

Eddie Jordan believes Lewis Hamilton needed a new F1 team for 2025

Lewis Hamilton has only made one move in his incredible Formula 1 career up to this point.

When he switched McLaren for Mercedes at the end of the 2012 season, plenty of eyebrows were raised.

However, it proved to be a masterstroke and ended up being a decision that earned him six of his seven world championships.

It’s too simplistic to assume that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 will be just as successful.

There are a lot of factors at play and in Leclerc, he’ll have one of his strongest teammates in his F1 career to compete with in equal machinery.

Mercedes have shown over the last two seasons that they’ve not fully grasped the latest set of regulations and it’s understandable why Hamilton wanted to make a change.

Jordan also believes that for Hamilton’s own motivation, he needed to join Ferrari in 2025 to potentially bring to an end one of Formula 1’s greatest-ever careers.

Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari one of F1’s most exciting driver moves

Asked about how Hamilton’s season has gone up to this point, Jordan said: “I think his mojo was up at Mercedes, I think he needed a new home.

“And often the case is when the time and the pressure and the stress on people is so intense, you need to set another parameter and I think that’s why Lewis went there.

“I truthfully don’t believe it’s to do with contracts or money, I think he feels he would like to see his career finish at Ferrari because it’s a magic place to go.

“He intends to go and live in Italy which I can understand, he intends to learn the language fluently and I think they’re all very important because if you don’t do that you will not be ingratiated within the Ferrari confines.

“Can he win a world championship in the future? I think they are very strong.

“We are all very impressed with Frederic Vasseur because I think Fred has brought a magic calm to that team and it’s a bit like what McLaren is doing and that is they are slowly, slowly, slowly catching the monkey and the monkey being Red Bull.”

Hamilton will hope that Ferrari can provide him with a car on a similar level to Red Bull and McLaren in 2025.

He and Russell must be watching on in frustration as F1 finally has a three-way battle for pole position and victories at each Grand Prix and they’re not involved.

It’s unlikely that Hamilton is counting down the days until he leaves Mercedes given the unbelievable success they’ve enjoyed together.

But excitement is already building to see how F1’s most winning driver fares at F1’s most successful team.
