Dauphiné stage neutralised after big crash including leader Evenepoel

The fifth stage of the Critérium de Dauphiné cycling race was neutralised on Thursday after a mass crash which also involved overall leader Remco Evenepoel and main rival Primoz Roglic.

A large number of riders fell on a wet descent 21 kilometres from the finish line of the 167km stage from Amplepuis to Saint-Priest.

"The stage will be neutralised due to the lack of medical assistance still available. No time will be taken on this stage, and there will be no stage winner," organizers said.

Most riders including Belgian Evenepoel and Slovenia's Roglic, who is second in the overall standings 33 seconds behind, appeared not seriously hurt and reached the finish line.

But Dutch riders Steven Kruijswijk and Dylan van Baarle from the Visma-Lease a bike team of Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard were taken to hospital.

"Overall it's okay - I crashed on the right side. I crashed on my head as well so the helmet saved me today. There are guys in a worse situation than I am now so I hope and I wish everybody a recovery," cyclingews.com quoted Evenepoel as saying.

"I fell on my shoulder again and I think it's bleeding so we have to see what that will say. We'll have to see tonight but in the end, everything felt quite alright."

The Dauphiné race which runs until Sunday is along with next week's Tour de Swiss an important tune-up for the Tour de France which starts on June 29.
