World Environment Day: Industrial pollution, major challenge facing Ogun – Abiodun

The Ogun State government has decried that industrial pollution, derogation of lands and vegetation among others are major environment challenges facing the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun stated this at the 2024 World Environment Day celebration held in Kuto, Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Abiodun urged relevant stakeholders in the state to join hands in creating a resilient livable and sustainable urban environment.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako, noted that achieving a smart city requires active participation and engagement from all relevant stakeholders.

“In Ogun State the industrial capital of the Nigeria, our major environmental issues bothers on industrial pollution,derogation of land and vegetation. Our sub theme: Achieving the Smart City Agenda through Climate Change Resilience and Urban Afforestation highlights, the critical need for sustainable urban development and addressing the challenges poised by climate change.

“As our city continues to grow and evolve it is imperative that we prioritise the creation of resilient livable and sustainable urban environment.

“Achieving the smart city agenda and building climate change resilience is not the sole responsibility of the government, It requires the active participation and engagement of all relevant stakeholders and we look forward to working with you to achieve this.

“As a government and a community it is crucial for us to work together to create an urban environment that enhances the quality of lives for the inhabitants of the state while ensuring sustainability for future generations,” he said.

The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, in his address noted that the celebration is an avenue for strategic planning and enhancement of coercion among economic, social and environmental policies.

Oresanya added that the state’s conversion of motorcycle and tricycle into energy is to support the federal government in reducing emission conditionally by 47 per cent in 2030.
