Ukraine hopes for an allied "landing", similar to 80 years ago in Normandy, to help defend against Russian forces, states President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the event marking the 80 anniversary of the Allied landing in Normandy.
During the president's participation in the celebrations, he was asked if he expects an "allied landing" in Ukraine.
"I hope so," the president replied.
The Normandy Landing
On June 6, 1944, British, Canadian, and American troops landed in Normandy, a region in northern France. The operation was successful, allowing the Allies to push back the German occupying forces that controlled France at the time.
Over 150,000 soldiers landed on the shores, making it the largest amphibious assault in history.
Today, France is hosting commemorative events to mark the 80 anniversary of the Allied landing in Normandy. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among the attendees.
The Ukrainian president also has scheduled talks with US President Joe Biden, who is attending the event.
