France supports Ukraine's accession to the European Union, but “this will not happen immediately,” stated French President Emmanuel Macron during an interview with the French media.

“We support Ukraine's candidacy for membership in the European Union,” Macron said.

He noted that France played a leading role in supporting Ukraine as a candidate for EU membership.

"We will continue to do so. This is an opportunity for Ukraine to carry out all the necessary reforms for joining the European Union. But this will not happen immediately," added the French president.

Ukraine's accession to the EU

In December 2023, the EU officially supported the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine.

Recently, Politico wrote that the EU wants negotiations with Ukraine to begin by July 1.
