A quiet New Hampshire town was rocked by a gruesome crime that left the community reeling. Thomas Humphrey, a 47-year-old man, was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years to life in prison for the brutal murder of his own mother, Linda Tufts.
The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident shed light on the devastating consequences that can arise from unresolved conflicts and the escalation of domestic tensions.
The events unfolded on November 28, 2023, when Goffstown police received a distressing call to a single-family residence on Joffre Street.

Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of Linda Tufts, 70, and an active fire within the home.
The investigation quickly revealed that the catalyst for this horrific act was a dispute over the volume of the video games Humphrey had been playing on the PlayStation his mother had gifted him for his birthday.
According to prosecutors, Humphrey, who resided in the basement of the shared home, violently lashed out at his mother after the two had engaged in a heated argument about the noise level of his video game sessions.
In a fit of rage, Humphrey brutally stabbed Tufts multiple times, nearly decapitating the woman. The assailant then added to the tragedy by setting his mother's body on fire, further compounding the brutality of the crime.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Humphrey at the bottom of the basement stairs, nursing self-inflicted wounds and still clutching the knife used in the attack. The authorities promptly apprehended the suspect and transported him for medical treatment, where he eventually confessed to the heinous act.
On Tuesday, Humphrey faced the consequences of his actions, as he was sentenced by Judge William Delker to 40 years to life in prison.
"This is, as I said in my more than a decade on the bench, one of the most brutal murders that I've presided over," said Judge William Delker, according to WMUR.

Initially, Humphrey had pleaded not guilty to the charges of second-degree murder and arson. However, he later changed his plea to guilty, likely in an effort to secure a more lenient sentence. Interestingly, this was not Humphrey's first encounter with the criminal justice system, as he had previously faced charges, though the details of his prior legal troubles remain unclear.
