League One club confirm new manager - and are reportedly now in talks to snatch Wrexham transfer target

Wrexham will face a major step up in League One and will be locking horns with the likes of Birmingham City next season.

Wrexham against Birmingham City in a league game is a real rarity.

The two sides have only faced off nine times in the history of the game and the last league meeting came way, way back in 1995.

There have only been two meetings since then; a 1997 FA Cup tie and a 2006 League Cup clash.

Wrexham’s incredible rise from the National League now sets up a first meeting between the two sides in going on 20 years.

Birmingham’s relegation sees the Blues prepare for life in League One – and they are now making moves to try and secure a return to the Championship.

Birmingham City appoint new manager

Wrexham have gone down the route of having a tried-and-tested manager.

Phil Parkinson knows the EFL inside and out, winning multiple promotions even before arriving at the STōK Cae Ras.

Many clubs are now looking for the next top young manager though, inspired by the success of Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town.

Birmingham have now gone that route having previously gone for experience with Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett.

The Blues have now appointed Chris Davies as their new boss, handing him his first managerial job.

Davies is best known for being Brendan Rodgers’ assistant at Celtic and Leicester City before heading to Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

Davies worked as Ange Postecoglou’s assistant last season but has now decided to start his managerial career at Birmingham.

That will now tee up a fascinating clash between the experience of Parkinson and the potential of Davies when Wrexham meet Birmingham next term.

The pair may already have one battle on the horizon though with Wrexham and Birmingham set to scrap over a key transfer this summer.

Wrexham face Marc Leonard battle

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that Birmingham have now started talks to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Marc Leonard.

Reports in May suggested that Wrexham are keen to land Leonard in a £300,000 move.

Wrexham already have a quality midfield trio of George Evans, Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee but seemingly want to add Leonard as a top talent for the future.

Birmingham are now making their move though and Nixon suggests that they could offer a ‘lucrative deal’ to try and convince him into the move.

It’s a long time since Wrexham had to battle Birmingham for a transfer, but Leonard is now at the centre of a real tug-of-war.

Securing Leonard may well be the first job for Davies as he settles into the Birmingham job, but Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will be pushing for him to make the move to Wrexham instead.
