Former Man Utd fan favourite pictured signing new deal with South American giants

Former Manchester United fan favourite Sergio Romero is still going strong at the age of 37.

The role of a back-up goalkeeper is a tough one for any player, and it’s no different at Manchester United.

Just ask Altay Bayindir, where the preference for Erik ten Hag has been to keep him out of sight, to avoid any controversy over who should be number one.

One player who embraced the role, and maximised every minute he got, leaving fans wanting more, was Sergio Romero.

Sergio Romero signs new Boca Juniors deal

Since 2022, Sergio Romero has been with Argentine giants Boca Juniors, where he is embracing a role he did not have at Manchester United, number one goalkeeper.

Romero, 37, is highly valued at Boca, who have just signed him to a new contract extension, running to December 2025.

It is high reward for the veteran, who has already played more games for Boca Juniors in two years than he had for Manchester United

  • Manchester United 2014-2021: 61 games
  • Boca Juniors 2022-present: 71 games

Romero had a spell at Italian side Venezia in between, in which he played 16 times.

His stint at Boca has been successful, conceding only 64 goals during his 71 games – but that pales in comparison to his Manchester United stint, where he only conceded 27 goals, and kept 39 clean sheets.

Boca Juniors eyeing Edinson Cavani extension

After re-signing Sergio Romero to a new deal, Boca Juniors want Edinson Cavani to stick around for longer too.

Argentine outlet TN report negotiations with Cavani over a new contract could now take place after Romero’s deal was secured.

The two players briefly crossed over at Carrington in late 2020 after Cavani signed for the club.

However, by this time Romero was on his way out, upset at being denied an exit that summer, after being dropped for three semi-finals by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after helping Manchester United reach them.
