Unemployment in the Gaza Strip close to 80%, UN labour agency says

After eight months of war, unemployment in the Gaza Strip stands at 79.1%, according to an analysis released on Friday by a UN agency.

In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where the frequency of clashes between Palestinians, Israeli settlers and soldiers has risen significantly, it stands at 32%, the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported together with the Palestinian statistics office.

The figures are probably much higher, the ILO reported, as people who are no longer looking for work due to the volatile situation are not included.

Real gross domestic product in the Gaza Strip had shrunk by 83.5% over the past eight months; in the West Bank by 22.7%.

In the first four months of the Israel-Hamas conflict, the private sector in both Palestinian territories together suffered daily production losses of $19 million, the agency said.

"Our new bulletin shows that the grim toll the war in the Gaza Strip has taken on human lives, and the desperate humanitarian situation it has caused, are accompanied by widespread devastation of economic activities and livelihoods," said ILO Regional Director for Arab States Ruba Jaradat.

"This compounds the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and further endangers their safety and well-being."
