A homeless charity hopes to create the “ultimate second-hand thrifting experience” with what’s believed to be Kent’s largest secondhand clothing shop.
Gillingham Street Angels welcomed its first customers into the pre-loved clothing emporium in Chatham High Street today (June 7).
The new two-level store aims to offer “sustainable shopping for all at unbeatable prices” and promises to be “an absolute treasure trove of amazing items,” featuring everything from basic items for just £1 to vintage, bridal and prom wear at affordable prices.
The store will also be home to a free school uniform bank and offer children’s clothing at 10 items for £5 to support local families and help combat the cost of living crisis.
The charity was supported in its project by Gray’s of Chatham, which offered the opportunity to lease their old car showroom.
A spokesman for the Gillingham Street Angels described the idea behind the outlet.
“The fit out aim was to design and create the first 100% sustainable and zero cost charity retail outlet in the UK.
“The store has been created entirely from repurposing items and shop fittings destined for landfill. There has been no grand refit budget, instead we have chosen to source and use repurpose and up-cycle materials and utilise donated tools and fabrics to fit out.”
Future plans for the building include providing creative opportunities for community groups to share and learn “forgotten skills” such as tailoring, sewing, and breathing new life into unloved items through up-cycling, re-purposing and repairing.
