Florida State safety Shyheim Brown is coming off a terrific 2023 season and only hoping to build on his progress last fall in 2024.

Head coach Mike Norvell even highlighted Brown at a recent offseason press conference. When asked about the rising junior, Norvell heaped praise on Brown for his personal development since joining the Seminole program.

“I mean, Shy is a guy that’s really grown and developed throughout our program, and he played at a high level,” said Norvell. “You know, I think he had some all-conference recognition this last year and we need him to take a continued step.”

Perhaps that next step is taking on one of the leadership roles on the team in his fourth total season

“And I think that he’s embraced the leadership role. You know, his teammates love him, he’s a very hardworking young man.”

With Brown, Norvell truly believes he has one of the emerging top defenders in the country.

“You’re excited to see him continue to progress within his journey to go be one of the top safeties you know in our league, and pushed to be one of the top safeties in the country. So I’m really proud of what I’ve seen from him and, you know, just looking forward to him taking another step. “

In 2023, Shyheim Brown racked up 53 total tackles, two sacks and an interception. He also proved to be quite durable, playing in every single game for the second consecutive season, including the Orange Bowl, which many FSU players sat out of.

According to Brown himself, that decision was pretty easy.

“It wasn’t too hard, because you show up with the guys you love and play for every day,” Brown said of suiting up for a short-handed FSU team against Georgia. “It was hard for about a week for me, but I talked to my mom, and she had some wise words for me. So it wasn’t too hard. And then I love these boys to death, so it wasn’t hard to come out here and play for these boys.”

Regardless of the final game, ’23 was a massive success for Florida State and Brown won’t soon forget the experience.

“13-0 and then who I got to do it with — even the bad games, the good games, you know. I’m always gonna remember who I did it with and how we did it. I had to show out the guys one more time.”
