Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has nothing if not a hearty, self-depreciating sense of humor. And he flexed it on social media on Friday with a jab at his former employer, Tennessee.
Kiffin’s specific joke wove together a new story — the allowance of corporate sponsor logos on playing fields in college football — with a less recent one: The time Tennessee fans hurled various objects at Kiffin and his Ole Miss team amid a controversial moment during a game at Neyland Stadium in 2021. Those objects included a bottle of French’s yellow mustard.
So Kiffin found a prompt post asking which sponsor Tennessee should partner with for the field at Neyland Stadium and offered a simple option: French’s Mustard.
Kiffin also added an emoji of a man golfing, likely a nod to the fact he walked off the field with a golf ball that had been thrown down by an irate Volunteer fan.
It’s also not Kiffin’s first time leaning into the wacky evening at Neyland Stadium for a troll, including signing a mustard bottle at SEC Media Days in 2022.
Kiffin said then that it’s been part of an interesting offseason as he got ready for his third season as Rebels coach. He also signed golf balls, which a fan also threw during that Ole Miss vs. Tennessee matchup, and even threw a golf ball during his first pitch before the Rebels played the Vols in baseball.
However, Ole Miss lost that game, and Rebels fans blamed the troll. Kiffin said it was all part of his master plan to motivate the Rebels baseball team to win the national championship, which they went on to do at the 2022 College World Series, a few months prior to Kiffin’s mustard bottle antics.
“I did sign a mustard bottle,” KIiffin said. “That was the first guy to come up. … I have signed a lot of mustard bottles and golf balls, which normally I haven’t. It’s been a unique offseason. On the golf ball, which goes back to the first pitch I threw out for the Tennessee game, we got swept by Tennessee, didn’t play well. Everybody thought it was my fault.
“I had a plan. I wanted our guys to stay humble, not play very well, then we’d go win the national championship in baseball. I’d like to say that was a plan. All the Tennessee fans that were all excited about sweeping us, there was a plan.”
