German amateur football match interrupted after racist chants

A district league football match in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt was interrupted after some people at the game reportedly shouted racist chants.

Criminal charges have been filed on suspicion of incitement to hatred, a police spokesman said early on Saturday morning.

Police said the referee had called off the match played south of Magdeburg in the municipality of Bördeland-Eggersdorf on Friday evening after some people reportedly yelled racist slogans.

It was initially unclear whether the chanting came from spectators or players.

According to the spokesman, police launched an investigation after match officials had reported the suspension of the game between the teams TSV Blau-Weiß Eggersdorf and Union 1861 Schönebeck.
