Arsenal flop Arteta sold for £7m could now leave his club after 'difficult' season

Arsenal have sold or released a lot of players in Mikel Arteta’s time at the club, and they have enjoyed mixed successes since leaving the Emirates.

Some players have gone on to shine elsewhere despite not making the grade at Arsenal, such as goalkeeper Emi Martinez, whilst others saw their struggles continue, with Nicolas Pepe recently suffering a disaster in the Turkish Cup final for Trabzonspor.

A player who like Pepe, left Arsenal permanently last summer was Matt Turner. The USMNT goalkeeper spent just one year at Arsenal before moving to Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £7m, as Arteta brought in David Raya.

Turner was far from a success in his seven appearances at Arsenal, but he was deemed to be a Premier League quality goalkeeper by Forest as they recruited him. However, his time at the City Ground has not been an enjoyable one.

The Athletic have now reported that Turner will be available for a transfer away from Forest, having fallen down the pecking order, but whilst there is interest in him from MLS sides, the finances of any deal may prove to be an obstacle.

“Matt Turner and Odi Vlachodimos both had a difficult time after joining Forest last summer and will be available now. There is interest from the MLS in USMNT goalkeeper Turner, but the finances involved might be prohibitive,” the report stated.

It now appears that Turner’s two-year spell in English football will be coming to an end, but he will feature as USA compete in the Copa America this summer.

Turner made 17 Premier League appearances this season, with his debut in the competition actually coming against Arsenal on the opening day at the Emirates.

However, Forest were unhappy with his performance levels, with Gary Neville even branding him as “useless,” and recruited goalkeeper Matz Sels to replace him in January.

The 29-year-old has not played in the Premier League since losing to Arsenal in January, as a brace from Gabriel Jesus handed Arsenal a 2-1 win at the City Ground, and the 29-year-old was at fault for one of the Brazilian’s goals.

Arsenal will look to recruit yet another backup goalkeeper this summer, with Aaron Ramsdale expected to leave, and Wojciech Szczesny has been linked with a sensational return to North London.
