Drivers could be given ‘huge boost’ with simple fuel saving trick

Drivers have been urged to take advantage of a fuel saving measure which could help reduce bills.

According to experts, drivers could use a sat nav system trick to help them cut down on fuel costs.

The trick involves using a Google Maps feature which is free to download on phones or via built-in systems.

The fuel-saving tactic comes as the price of petrol and diesel still remains unaffordable high with drivers paying an average of 147.88p per litre for petrol and 153.58p a litre for diesel, although slightly less than in April.

FUEL WARNING

The RAC forecasted prices to continue falling further soon, with wholesale costs dropping for the first time in months.

Graham Conway, an expert from Select Car Leasing detailed how there is one feature from Google Maps which drivers should be aware of.

He explained: “There is one feature in particular that is commonly ignored which can prove a huge boost for motorists.”

To access, motorists need to enter their destination into the app and choose directions then look for the three small vertical dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

From here drivers should select the options tab and then look for the “prefer fuel-efficient routes” toggle, which you can switch on by moving to the right.

This will now offer drivers a cheaper more energy-efficient route which could see their tank travel.

The Google Maps software will then use a selection of specific data to make sure drivers are not only saving on fuel but also being kind to the planet, Conway explained.

The Google website stated: “Google Maps can estimate fuel or energy efficiency for different vehicle types, including electric and combustion engine cars, as well as petrol motorcycles.

“The more fuel or energy efficient the route, the lower your vehicle’s fuel or energy usage and CO2 emissions.”

To determine the best route, if the cost-saving feature is turned on, Google Maps will consider fuel efficiency in addition to factors like real-time traffic, route simplicity and road conditions, the website stated.

Conway added that with sat nav software being such a “huge part” of driving these days, it’s important to ensure it works for individual needs.

He said: “In Google Maps you can change your vehicle icon and use the app to remember where you parked.

“It also plots a route to multiple destinations in one trip, which will also take advantage of the fuel-efficiency calculations.”

Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's are selling petrol for an average of 2.1p less per litre (145.25p per litre, compared to Asda at 147.38p) and diesel for 2.5p less (150.45p per litre, compared to Asda at 152.98p).
