Far-right AfD politician, 70, assaulted in Dresden, suspect detained

A member of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was punched in the face on Saturday by a man at an information stand in Dresden, the party said.

Hans-Jürgen Zickler, 70, a member of the AfD state parliament in Saxony, was suddenly assaulted, according to AfD Saxony spokesman Andreas Harlass.

Dresden police confirmed the incident. The attacker was detained until the police arrived and criminal charges were filed.

The suspect is a 47-year-old man who is being investigated on suspicion of assault, after punching a 70-year-old man at a voting booth, they said.

German voters go to the polls on Sunday as part of the EU-wide European Parliament elections.
