Louis van Gaal shares who he thinks is the best Dutch coach… Erik ten Hag or Arne Slot

Liverpool are now officially underway with the Arne Slot era.

Slot began his career with the Reds on June the 1st but is still yet to be seen publicly as the Liverpool boss.

In the meantime, the 45-year-old is said to have been settling he and his family in on Merseyside.

With the Liverpool players not due back at the AXA Training Centre for another month or so, it might be a while before Slot is in the spotlight.

Nevertheless, there has already been plenty of opinion formed about the new Liverpool head coach. The latest to speak out on Slot’s move to Anfield is former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

Louis van Gaal names the current best Dutch coach

Although he is one of the most distinguished European coaches of a generation, Van Gaal didn’t do all that well in England.

Already perhaps with his best days as a coach behind him, the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss struggled to get the fans onside at Old Trafford.

The same could possibly be said for another Dutch Man United coach; Erik ten Hag. Though Ten Hag just beat Man City to an FA Cup, it seems possible that he could be sacked by United this summer.

With the pair being compatriots, obvious comparisons have been made between the coaches of the Red Devil’s and the Reds – though Ten Hag and Slot appear to be quite different.

Should United keep Ten Hag, we’ll no doubt see fans of both clubs arguing which manager is the superior throughout the coming season.

But speaking to Sky Sports on Saturday, it seems as though Van Gaal has already made his choice.

“Yes it’s a big job because Jurgen Klopp has done it fantastically,” says the 72-year-old. “He [Slot] as the successor, it’s always more difficult. But he is a good trainer coach.

“I think at the moment with Peter Bosz he is the best trainer coach from the Netherlands. And he was reachable, he was at that time free. So, I think Liverpool have made a very good choice.”

Jamie Carragher makes Arne Slot prediction

If Slot matches Ten Hag’s achievements in his maiden season at Man United, then you’d have to assume that Liverpool fans would be relatively happy.

United came third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup a year ago. That is identical to Liverpool’s season this time around and would be seen as a success for Slot.

Somewhat ironically perhaps, anything less than this – or certainly the failure to secure top four – would probably be a disappointment.

As one of the most visible pundits around, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s view is always worth listening to on these things. And according to Carragher, the Reds should still be competing on all fronts next term.

Former Reds striker Daniel Sturridge is equally confident, predicting that Liverpool will not fall away under Slot.

If what Van Gaal says is correct and Slot is indeed superior to Ten Hag, then we don’t see why they should either.
