Right-hander Trey Pooser will start Game One of the Lexington Super Regional for Kentucky on Saturday.
Pooser pitched seven innings in Kentucky’s 6-1 Regional victory over Illinois last weekend, allowing just one earned run and five hits.
“Just super proud of him to do this in this environment,” Mingione said about Pooser. “If you told him this time last year, you’re gonna pitch in front of over 6,000 people to keep your team in the winner’s bracket to put you one win away from a super, man. To his credit, he has shown up every day and done everything he can to get better and help Kentucky win.”
Since his move to the Friday night starter, Pooser has blossomed into Kentucky’s “ace.” The right-hander boasts a 3.86 in 56 innings pitched as a starter. Even he said he wouldn’t believe where he’d be at now at the beginning of the season.
“You always want to do good,” Pooser said on Saturday. “You don’t ever know exactly how it’s going to go and everything doesn’t always go as planned, but I’m glad it has gone the way it has. Just got to keep going.”
The opening game of the Super Regional will begin at 6:00 p.m. EST Saturday night.
