Alabama distance runner Doris Lemngole closed the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the national champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase behind a record-setting performance to become the Crimson Tide’s first champion in the event in school history.

Pulling away from the field on the final two laps, Lemngole ran a lifetime-best 9:15.24 to give the West Pokot County, Kenya, native the collegiate record, the meet record and the school record.

UA teammate Hilda Olemomoi concluded the final day as the national runner-up in the women’s 5,000-meter clocking 15:10.04. The result gave Olemomoi two second-place finishes during the national meet, after first claiming silver in the 10,000-meter run Thursday night.

The Crimson Tide women finished the national championship tied for seventh, accumulating 26 points.

HEAD COACH DAN WATERS

“I’m very proud of Doris, she’s now a national champion in the steeplechase and the collegiate record holder, as a freshman.

Overall, to bring home yet another top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships speaks to the standard we’ve established at Alabama. I’m proud of all our athletes and our coaching staff for the way they represented our program. I saw some great things. We learned quite a bit from where we were indoors to where we are today, we grew a lot as a team, a lot as a program, so I’m proud of that.”
