There may not be a pitcher in the country who’s hotter than Trey Pooser right now.
Pooser, who teammate Ryan Nicholson described as “the best pitcher in the country that nobody knows about,” held Oregon State to just one hit and no runs over seven innings in Kentucky’s 10-0 win Saturday night.
“He is like one of the best pitchers in the country that nobody knows about,” Nicholson said postgame. “He goes out there and he shoves, and he doesn’t really talk about it. He’s not a boastful guy. He’s all about the team. But he just goes out there with a smile on his face, and he goes and gets outs for the guys behind him. And I think me and [Émilien] Pitre, I think I can speak for Petey that we both love that.”
The College of Charleston transfer has pitched 19 innings in the postseason and has allowed just one earned run. He held Arkansas to just one run over five innings in the SEC Tournament, and held Illinois (Lexington Regional) and Oregon State (Lexington Super Regional) to a combined six hits and no earned runs over 14 innings.
That’s good for a 0.47 ERA over his last 19 innings pitched.
“Yeah, I feel like — I don’t know, I feel like I’ve been trying to do the same thing; it’s just worked out better for me honestly,” Pooser said postgame. “That’s pretty much it. I’ve just been doing the same thing I’ve been trying to do all season and it’s just worked out a lot better for me this postseason.”
Since his move to the Friday night starter, Pooser has blossomed into Kentucky’s “ace.” Including Saturday’s masterful start where he held the Beavers scoreless over seven innings, the right-hander boasts a 3.21 ERA in 70 starter innings pitched.
“I wouldn’t really say that I felt that I was an ace,” Pooser said. “I just felt like I was just another good addition to the starting rotation. I think after the Ole Miss game maybe was when I felt like I really solidified the role, or felt like I could go back out there and keep doing the same thing week after week.”
Kentucky will go for the Lexington Super Regional win over Oregon State Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. EST. With a win, the Cats would clinch their first College World Series berth in program history.
