A 22-year-old who had been “experimenting” with drugs at a party later drove off, swerved into the wrong side of the road and crashed into another car.
Those actions meant that Oliver Eglen found himself at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he admitted driving above the specified drug limit.
The police were called to the A1065 at South Raynham on October 29 last year after reports of a collision between a Toyota and a red Volkswagen Polo.
Eyewitnesses who saw the crash reported that the Polo had swerved into the wrong side of the road and crashed into the Toyota.
Eglen was driving the Polo and was asked by officers to complete a drugs test, which came back positive for benzoylecgonine - a cocaine breakdown.
A reading of 77mcg of benzoylecgonine per litre of blood was recorded, the legal limit to drive being 50mcg.
Both Eglen and the driver and passengers of the Toyota were taken to hospital to be checked over but no serious injuries were reported.
In mitigation, George Sorrell said that Eglen was “persuaded” to try cocaine at a party.
“If there was no mitigation this would be a very serious matter,” said Mr Sorrell.
“I want to assure you that the defendant has taken this very seriously. He is a young man from a good family.
“He went to a party where other people persuaded him to try this substance.
“This whole incident, as serious as it is, was brought about due to circumstances which could affect any young person. The prospect of experimenting with drugs.
“The defendant has come to realise the consequences of that. It will never happen again.”
Eglen, of Church Close, Bawdeswell, near Dereham, was disqualified from driving for 20 months and was fined £200.
He will also pay a victim surcharge of £80 and court costs of £85.
