Cody Gakpo shares what didn’t go ‘so well’ for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool last season

Liverpool can certainly be proud of their efforts last season, particularly given their constant injury issues.

The Reds were by no means the only Premier League club impacted by the issue, but they were continuously impacted.

That would have frustrated Jurgen Klopp, with the manager having wanted to leave on a high in his final campaign at Anfield.

Success did not go his way in the league and in Europe, but the German did manage to lift the League Cup.

And that was secured despite the Reds missing several key players for that meeting with Chelsea at Wembley.

Many youngsters were forced to step up in that match and indeed throughout the season, with many more experienced players asked to play out of position.

The latter was certainly the case for Cody Gakpo, who has had to occupy several different roles during his Liverpool career.

And the attacker has now addressed that issue, explaining that Klopp didn’t always manage the situation successfully.

“We had an injury crisis at Liverpool that had to be solved in a certain way,” said Gakpo, as quoted by the Mirror (Euro 2024 pullout, page 5).

“You have to just deal with it. Sometimes that went very well and sometimes not so well because of the constant switching.

“But it has been a process from which I eventually gained a lot for myself. In the end, I am grateful that it turned out to be a very instructive season.”

Can Cody Gakpo take his game to another level under Arne Slot?

Gakpo has played all across the frontline for Liverpool since arriving at Anfield from Dutch side PSV in January 2023.

He wasn’t always in Klopp’s plans, with the Netherlands international in and out of the team following the move.

Former Anfield man Jamie Redknapp believed that a run in the team was all that Gakpo needed to find his feet, while Klopp himself did explain last month that he may have mismanaged the forward last season.

Still, the 25-year-old enjoyed a productive season, registering tallies of 16 goals and six assists from his 53 appearances.

But given the abundance of talent going forward at Anfield, Gakpo does need to improve upon those tallies under Slot.

The attacker has the perfect chance to impress his manager before the new season, with the forward certain to play a key role for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 this summer.

He does have previous in major competitions, having scored three goals at the 2022 World Cup, undoubtedly helping convince Liverpool to make their move just a month later.
