Swiss vote in favour of easier expansion of renewable energy plants

The Swiss voted on Sunday in favour of facilitating the expansion of renewable energies in a referendum with 69% of citizens in favour of allowing 16 hydropower plants to be built or expanded.

This decision also facilitates the construction of large solar and wind power plants, in line with the government's goal to increase domestic electricity production.

Opponents argued that the Electricity Supply Act would lead to environmental degradation, including the deforestation for wind turbines, disfigurement of alpine landscapes with solar panels and the flooding of habitats for hydropower.

Switzerland currently relies heavily on nuclear power, which accounts for 36% of its energy.

The existing power plants will remain operational as long as they are deemed safe.

Additionally, projections showed that the Swiss rejected three other initiatives, including one to cap health insurance costs, with a clear majority in some cases.

The projections were compiled by gfs.bern on behalf of the Swiss broadcaster SRF.
