Hunter Biden would not be embroiled in his current legal battles had Donald Trump not been convicted last month, according to US political commentator Tim Young.
The president’s son is accused of lying about his drug use on a form when purchasing a firearm and ammunition from a shop in 2018.
The 54-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the charges, with his defence team saying he did not lie on the paperwork as he was in recovery at the time.
He could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Speaking on GBN America, Young claimed Biden has been “caught in the crossfire” of Donald Trump’s verdict and he would have received a “slap on the wrist” had the the former president’s case not have taken place.
“Poor Hunter. I think any other time of the year, any other time in history, he would have just got a plea deal”, he said.
“His attorneys had asked for one and it was magically shot down. Usually this would just be pled away and he’d get a lesser sentence or no sentence or a tiny slap on the wrist.
“In this instance, while Joe Biden and his appointees are going after Donald Trump, they are going to try to lock up Hunter for whatever he has done.
“Poor Hunter has to be the example that everything is ‘equal’ in this country and everyone is ‘equal’ under law. This is them saying, ‘we’re going after Trump, but we’re going to put down one of our own as well’.”
Asked by Mark Dolan whether this is the Democrats seeking to create an “illusion of balance”, Young responded: “100 per cent”.
He added: “He’s committed many crimes. Remember his laptop with fake Russian propaganda and disinformation. We were all banned from social media for even mentioning it.
“Even the New York Post were banned from social media for mentioning it. It’s the top piece of evidence in all of this.
“If they weren’t going after Trump, we wouldn’t even hear about Hunter Biden right now.”
It comes after Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in his trial last month.
The ex-president has confirmed he will appeal against the historic conviction which he has criticised, saying the trial was a “sham”.
His opponent for the November presidential election, Joe Biden, hit back at the comments, saying it was “reckless” to say the trial was rigged.
