Croatia's ruling conservative HDZ wins EU parliament poll

The ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has emerged the clear winner in the European elections, the electoral commission said late Sunday with almost all votes counted.

The party led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has taken six of the country's 12 seats in the European Parliament, the commission said.

The HDZ sits with the European People's Party (EPP) in the parliament.

The opposition Social Democrats (SDP) got four seats.

The right-wing populist Homeland Movement, which is part of the governing coalition, and the Mozemo left-green movement each secured one seat.

Croatia elected a national parliament two months ago. The Homeland Movement is the most right-wing party to join a Croatian government since the break-up of Yugoslavia.
