Voting in the European Parliament elections has ended in Germany, and exit polls have been announced. Preliminary, the conservative CDU/CSU alliance is in the lead, but the Social Democratic Party may lose to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), reports The Guardian.
According to exit polls, the CDU/CSU alliance may receive between 29.5 and 30% of the vote, which would be the highest result of any party. In general, support for the CDU/CSU has remained almost unchanged since the last election in 2019.
The far-right AfD has made significant gains since 2019. In this election, the far-right could gain 16-16.5%, compared to 11% five years ago.
If this prediction comes true, the AfD will overtake Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD party, which could get about 14% of the vote. This would be even worse than the SPD's result in the 2019 elections when the party won 15.8% of the vote.
The Green Party, according to exit polls, may have only 12-12.5% of the vote, down from 20.5% percent in 2019. Back then, they had the second highest result in the European Parliament elections, and this time they will lose to the AfD and the Social Democrats.
In general, all three parties that are part of the German coalition government will receive the least support in this year's European Parliament elections. The Free Democrats, in particular, may be supported by only 5% of voters.

The European Parliament elections are taking place across the EU from June 6 to 9. National parties are competing for the support of their citizens to get into the new European Parliament.
