Denny Hamlin reacts to blown engine on second lap at Sonoma: ‘Certainly not ideal’

Denny Hamlin’s run in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway came to a premature end on Lap 2 of 110.

Hamlin, who started the race back in 25th, saw his engine blow up as he crossed the start/finish line after completing just two laps at Sonoma. In his own words, “certainly not ideal.”

“No, no [indication],” Hamlin told Jamie Little of FOX Sports. “Just the gearing is a little weird for the track. There’s a lot of high-end RPM stuff — same as everyone else and just blew up on Lap 2. Not really sure. They’ll look at it and figure it out, but certainly not ideal.”

Hamlin entered Sunday’s race as the points leader, having tallied five consecutive top-five finishes dating back to Dover in late April.
