The bodies of two German men aged 21 and 22 who went missing in the Netherlands have been recovered from the River Meuse near the border city of Venlo, Dutch police announced on the X messaging service on Sunday.

The two young men lived in the German town of Nettetal just across the border. They had jumped into the river on Sunday, June 2, to recover a mobile phone and are thought to have been swept away by the strong currents.

The body of the 22-year-old was recovered on Friday. A third man who attempted to help them managed to make his way to safety.

Police and emergency services on both sides of the border had spent days looking for them, deploying a sonar boat in their search.

The Meuse rises in France and flows through Belgium and the Netherlands to the North Sea.
