The conservative governing New Democracy (ND) party is ahead in the European elections in Greece.

According to preliminary partial results from Sunday after some 45% of the votes had been counted, the party of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis achieved around 27.6%, meaning it is likely to send seven lawmakers to the European Parliament.

Far behind in second place are the left-wing alliance SYRIZA, with around 14.6% or four MEPs, and the social democratic party PASOK with around 13.4%, or three MEPs.

Contrary to forecasts, the parties on the far right and far left performed relatively poorly.

The nationalist Greek Solution party achieved just under 10% and thus two to three MEPs, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) 9.31%, also two or three MEPs.

The Christian Orthodox Victory (Niki) party received around 4.4% and thus probably one seat.

The provisional final result is expected on Monday morning. As expected, voter turnout was low at just over 38%. In the European elections in 2019, the figure was just under 59%.
