Beaten German runner Gesa Felicitas Krause said on Monday she was pleased that Alice Finot of France was reinstated as European 3,000 metres steeplechase champion after an initial disqualification.
Finot won the race in 9 minutes 16.22 seconds in Rome's Olympic Stadium on Sunday night, almost two seconds ahead of Krause, with Elizabeth Bird of Britain third.
The French athlete was then disqualified for an "infringement of the inside border" of the track when she went over the water jump, with Krause promoted to gold, Bird to silver and Romania's Stella Rutto from fourth to bronze.
But Finot's team successfully appealed the decision and the initial order was eventually confirmed.
"It was an emotional roller-coaster. I am happy that the result stands now and that the sporting aspect prevailed. I finished second, Alice Finot deserves the gold," Krause said.
The German camp said it had not lodged a protest and that Finot was initially disqualified by event officials.
The 2016 and 2018 champion Krause was competing at an international championships for the first time after maternity leave.
"I wanted a medal. It is silver, and I am very, very happy about it," she said.
