Spain's opposition conservatives ahead of Sánchez's socialists

Spain's opposition conservative People's Party (PP) has taken top spot in the European elections, securing 34.18% after almost all the votes were counted, according to the electoral commission.

The PP increased its support from 20.15% in 2019. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's socialist PSOE was second on 30.19%, down from 32.86% five years ago.

Third was the right-wing populist Vox on 9.62%, up from 6.21% in 2019. Its result was, however, down from the 12.38% it gained in national parliamentary elections last year.

The small right-wing Salf party secured 4.58%. Sumar, the leftist coalition partner of the PSOE, gained 4.65%, and the breakaway left-alternatives of Podemos 3.27%.
