Jacques Villeneuve left stunned by Carlos Sainz after doing something you ‘never, ever do’ in Formula 1

The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix won’t be fondly remembered by the Ferrari F1 team or any of its fans.

After closing the gap to Red Bull to just 24 points after a fantastic Monaco Grand Prix, things couldn’t have got any worse for Ferrari once the chequered flag flew in Montreal.

Jacques Villeneuve was reflecting on the Canadian Grand Prix for Sky Sports F1 after watching both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz fail to finish the race.

Ferrari’s weekend started badly, with neither driver able to reach Q3 in qualifying, giving them plenty of work to do during a wet race.

Leclerc then suffered a technical fault and was left a minute behind his nearest rival at one point due to a ‘hopeless’ strategy call as described by Martin Brundle.

Sainz was still in the race before doing something that Jacques Villeneuve has suggested no F1 driver should ever do.

It not only ended his chances of scoring points but Alex Albon’s too.

It was a really tough race for Ferrari who despite having one of the fastest cars on the grid, failed to make their way through the pack in changeable conditions.

Leclerc was losing half a second each lap on the straights which was almost the only place on the track where cars could overtake.

Ferrari pitted the Monegasque at the end of the first safety car to put him onto hard tyres and eventually fix his engine problem.

However, the tyre choice was an awful decision and left Leclerc floundering at the back of the race before eventually retiring the 26-year-old.

That meant all the pressure was on Carlos Sainz to deliver something for the team but he was having a hard time in the midfield.

The track remained slippery and even though a dry line formed, one wheel on the damp part of the circuit was enough to see drivers lose control.

Heading into turn six, that’s exactly what happened to Sainz who spun turning into the left-hander.

However, Villeneuve then said Sainz did something that no F1 driver should ever do.

It might make his relationship with his potential new teammate Alex Albon in 2025 slightly strained already.

Heading into the closing stages of the race, Sainz was in a train of cars including both Alpine drivers and both RBs.

However, the Spaniard made a mistake heading into the corner that also caught out the likes of Sergio Perez and Logan Sargeant.

Albon had to take avoiding action, but Sainz still managed to crash into the back of his Williams.

Commenting on the incident, Villeneuve said: “Once it started raining, pit him [Charles Leclerc] right away.

“They had to try because they had engine issues and they were not going to score points, so trying fine, but like Karun [Chandhok] said, put on the soft tyres.

“And then [Carlos] Sainz spins and then lets go of the breaks, something you never, ever do and he collected [Alex] Albon.”

F1Oversteer understands that Sainz is in line to join Williams next year and partner Albon for 2025.

He should have stopped the car rather than letting it roll across the track and gave Albon no hope of avoiding his Ferrari.

Alpine were the team that benefitted from both drivers retiring, finishing 9 and 10, however, Esteban Ocon was left fuming at the end of the race after being told to give up track position to his teammate Pierre Gasly in the final laps.
