Patrick Vieira now shares how he felt after Steve Parish sacked him at Crystal Palace in March 2023

Patrick Vieira has now shared how he felt after Steve Parish sacked him at Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman was handed his P45 at Selhurst Park back in March 2023 following a run of 12 games without a win, which ended a promising tenure that included an FA Cup Semi-Final and a respectable 12th place finish in the 2021/22 campaign.

So, how did Patrick Vieira feel after Steve Parish fired him at Crystal Palace? Let’s take a look…

How Patrick Vieira felt after losing Crystal Palace job

The 47-year-old has now revealed that he found it “difficult” to accept being sacked at Crystal Palace.

Speaking alongside Ian Wright, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher on The Overlap, Vieira said: “I really enjoyed the first years at Palace. Changing the ideas, the way we wanted to play, a young team, it was good, but when it was a bit challenging, they decided to go in a different route, it was difficult for me to accept.”

By the sounds of it, the man from Dakar felt a lack of faith from Parish amid his first sticky spell in charge of the Eagles.

Vieira’s tenure was actually running quite smoothly until 2023 began – a year in which we went three consecutive Premier League games without a shot on target and also failed to win under the Frenchman.

Correct decision

Of course, people argued at the time that it was a harsh decision from Parish.

Vieira had just tackled a run of fixtures against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, but it was Roy Hodgson who got to oversee the so-called easier games after that stretch, such as Leicester, Leeds, Southampton and Everton.

Ultimately, the final performances under Vieira before his sacking were so concerning – failing to even get shots on target, as aforesaid – that nobody could really be sure if he would pick up the required points in these seemingly kinder fixtures.

Therefore – while it was a bold decision from Parish at the time – it has proven to be the right call, as we now find ourselves in a much better position as a football club.
