'I think': Jeff Stelling shares if Gareth Southgate should start Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield vs Serbia

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to divide opinion, but not because of his ability on the pitch.

The Anfield academy graduate has proven time and again that he is one of the world’s top players, with the 25-year-old shining for club and country.

It is, however, his best position in the pitch that is up for debate, with various perspectives emerging in recent times.

The debate is now heating up as Euro 2024 approaches, with England manager Gareth Southgate at the centre of the discussion.

A right-back for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has been named as a midfielder in the Three Lions squad for the major tournament.

Jeff Stelling shares Trent Alexander-Arnold midfield verdict ahead of Euro 2024

He has played in that position for his country lately, with the player also adopting an inverted full-back role for the Reds on several occasions.

Jeff Stelling has now shared his thoughts on the debate, explaining what he thinks Southgate should do in England’s opener against Serbia.

“I am going to put Declan Rice in midfield alongside Alexander-Arnold because I think that he is not the greatest defender in the world, but he adds a bit more pace, a bit more height and also he has got that brilliant ability to find a killer pass,” Stelling said on talkSPORT.

Will Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold feature heavily for England?

Given England’s very talented squad, there is another discussion to be had around Alexander-Arnold that involves playing time.

Southgate has a long list of talented players to choose from at Euro 2024, both in midfield and at right-back.

Manchester United legends Wayne Rooney and Roy Keane both agree over the Liverpool man, with the former believing he loses a lot of his qualities when played in midfield, while the latter believes England simply cannot play him there against the top teams.

England fans, however, are convinced that he has to start there following his goalscoring display in the friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Southgate now has a huge decision to make over the Anfield man, with the Three Lions’ opener against Serbia rapidly approaching.

Denmark and Slovenia also await in Group C as Alexander-Arnold and his England teammates look to go all the way in Germany.
